The University of Dar Es Salaam began as a college of the University of London
in 1961 with only one faculty: the Faculty of Law, and only
13 students. In 1963, it became a constituent college of the
University of East Africa that included the University College
of Nairobi in Kenya and Makerere University in Uganda. In 1970,
the University of East Africa split into three independent universities:
the Universities of Makerere, Nairobi, and Dar es Salaam.
To date, the University of Dar Es Salaam has grown to include 12 faculties, 11 institutes, and two constituent colleges. The University has a total of 6,095 students, of which 24 percent are female, and a total of 747 academic staff, of which 15 percent are female.
The Faculty of Science offers three-year undergraduate courses leading to degrees in Computer Science, Electronic Science, and Communications, among others. The Faculty also has a graduate study program in Scientific Computing. The Faculty of Engineering offers four-year undergraduate courses leading to Bachelor's of Science Degrees in Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The Cisco Networking Academy Program complements these programs with hands-on technology skills.
The University has a computer lab with 20 computers, all of which are linked to the Internet. A separate Cisco computer lab hosts five PCs and lab equipment, from where students access the web-based course material. Currently, one of the challenges the Networking Academy program faces is that most of the students rely solely on the computers in the lab, since most do not have access to computers outside of school.
Of the 40 Networking Academy program students currently enrolled,
only seven are female. The Networking Academy program in Tanzania
is working on a gender initiative to combat this imbalance.
The team in Dar es Salaam is also exchanging information with
other Networking Academies programs in neighboring Rwanda and
Malawi to learn they established all-female classes and increased
the number of instructors.
The Networking Academy program instructors at the University
of Dar es Salaam are confident that this curriculum, in addition
to the other IT courses, will positively effect the development
of Tanzania. In the past, many students graduated with basic
theories of computer systems, but now the Networking Academy
program will offer valuable hands-on experience and skills.
