Women Take Up the Challenge to Accelerate Jordan's Economy
The Women of Jordan

Under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah, Cisco has partnered with the Cisco Foundation, the Government of Jordan, and UNIFEM - the United Nations Development Fund for Women - to hold an international conference, Achieving E-Quality in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector, which is geared toward addressing issues of the digital divide. Launched in January 2002 the Achieving E-Quality in the ICT Sector project successfully completed its first phase, establishing ten gender-focused Cisco Networking Academies across Jordan as an initiative toward enhancing the Jordanian women's skills, knowledge and access to information. The initiative was a collaborative effort by Cisco, UNIFEM and the Government of Jordan and was conceived for addressing gender gaps in the ICT sector and making efforts for the overall regional and global advancement of women. The project also addresses Cisco's commitment to participate in the Least Developed Countries (LDC) initiative through strategic partnerships, announced in the G-8 Summit in July of 2002.

Aimed at addressing the low percentages of women's participation in the ICT sector in Jordan, the project attempts to mainstream women in the field of technology. More than 600 students have enrolled in the course to date, 66 percent of which are women who are now training to achieve the globally recognized Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification.

"In a country where women make up almost half the population, they have the power to make a difference, when given the opportunities and the environment. We congratulate all Jordanian women who are now part of the Cisco Networking Academy Program and we are proud to be working with the Government of Jordan and UNIFEM to make the vision of the leaders and the people of Jordan a reality," says Erin Walsh, manager, International Strategy and Partnerships, Cisco Worldwide Education. >> Read More
